I loved Ted's famous description of himself : "six four , dark hair , green piercing eyes, cat like movements, gold flex dances in my eyes when I looks at the light , loves cats and dogs, brings money home, how can you hate me , try !!"

God bless Ted Brown

Reasonably sure of an ID for the third guy in the "3-shot" with Jackie Robinson and William B. Williams .. the balding guy with the cigarette on the left. That would be Robinson's neighbor and friend of the era ... some guy named Cosell.

Thanks for the info on WNEW-AM. It was my favorate station in the late 50's and thru the 60's and 70's. I still remember the theme song for the Milkman's Matinee. "When the world should all be sleeping..." And I should have been. It was a great station and great music.

Dear Mr. Schwartz,
I am Joe Derise's daughter, Fay. My Mom, Pat Arcoleo (she went by the name, Pat Easton) recently passed away. My Mom and Dad sang in a group together called, Four Jacks and a Jill back in the late 40's and early 50's. My Mom also sang with Woody Herman, and with a group called the Tattlers.
My Dad talked about you and mentioned that when my daughter was born, you announced it on your station.
I am trying to locate some old tracks of my Mom and Dad and was wondering if you had any or had information as to how I can get copies.
Thanks for playing my Dad's music regularly, Mom and I always loved to listen to your show.
Fay

Reid Collins had one of those "radio" voices. Pardon me, he had an amazing radio voice. A deep, nuanced, incredable radio voice. A voice you would never suspect capable of coming from the narrow-framed, skinny as a reed, Reid Collins.
Perhaps that voice was the product of the product Reid had every day for lunch. This barely one hundred pound human drank his lunch. Not what you're thinking...It was a liquid diet drink. One day I screwed up the courage and confronted him. I asked, why such a skinny guy would constanty feel the need to contunually consume nothing but liqud diet drinks. He looked at me, as if I had gone daft.
"I like the taste"

I had the pleasure to work with George at WPAT, I was the engineer for
the morning show at WPAT AM/FM. This was sometime in the late 70's early 80's. George was true professional. He could be very funny when he wanted to make us laugh. George gave WPAT a polished sound, it was a pleasure working with him. He will be missed.

Poor Bill had his share of challenges, both deliberate and inadvertent. One afternoon, the bulletin bells clanged as AP (or was it UPI?) broke the news of the death of Joseph P. Kennedy. Rudy Ruderman and I tore off the bulletin, stapled it to a piece of copy paper, and rushed it into the studio, where a voice report in Bill's newscast was just ending. "This just in," said Bill, smoothly but with a clear sense of urgency. "Joseph P. Kennedy, father of an ill-starred political dynasty, has died. More details as they become available." Back in the newsroom, however, AP (or was it UPI?) was running a retraction. The bulletin had been run in error. Rudy handed Bill the retraction just as he was going into his headline recap. "Repeating the top story," he said, solemnly. "Joseph P. Kennedy... is... not... dead. A bulletin heard earlier on WNEW was in error..."

Just wanted to say thank you for writing such a wonderful piece about my "pappa" (grandpa). I'm his youngest son (Tim's) oldest daughter and was lucky enough to have him around when I was growing up. He was much more than just a grandpa, but such a friend too & this piece shows what I knew of him ~ the funny, spunky guy that could make anyone laugh. Brings a smile to my face when I read it. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts! ~Sara

I found your site through Marc Myers' Jazz Wax. My wife, Nell Bassett, was one of the original 'Where The Girls Are' on WNEW-FM. Do you know of any sites like this for WNEW-FM?
